There are four key areas to the ‘Active Schools’ Programme – our physical education lessons, physical activity at other times of the day, partnerships within the school, local and wider community and having an Active Schools Week.
Our school is working towards its second Active School flag. We understand the importance of physical activity in every child’s life.
Our PE curriculum covers all strands set out in Primary PE Curriculum which are athletics, games, gymnastics, aquatics, adventure sports and dance.
Alongside our PE curriculum we promote physical activity throughout the school year in a vast number of ways. Active learning and movement breaks are incorporated into our daily routines to ensure pupils remain active and understand the benefits of it. After school activities such as football, basketball and GAA encourage further physical activity as well as events such as Walk Around Ireland/Europe, our school Active Week and school sports day among others.
Our school has continuously worked in partnership with parents and organisations in the local area to promote physical activity and well being. Working with Waterford Sports Partnerships we have organised programs such as the Balance Bike Programme and the Cycle Right Programme. Coaching programmes from local GAA and rugby clubs have also taken place in our school. Throughout the school year our school enters individuals and team into local competitions such as athletics, tag rugby, GAA and football.
Our school has organised very successful Active School Weeks for the past number of years and will continue to do so in the future.
